review 1: 4.5/5 stars. What a fun book!!! I actually really enjoyed this story. I thought Kirsten white did a phenomenal job at creating AMAZING characters a complex world and a really interesting plot all in under 300 pages. The characters were probably my favorite part though. Jessamin, our protagonist, was spunky, fierce, and I absolutey loved her. Finn was of course gorgeous and funny and just marvelous. And I absolutely ADORED Eleanor. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I didn't hate it but I did think it was a little confusing and rushed. Overall really great fun standalone book!
review 2: (More like 4 1/4 or 4 1/2 stars) I have a thousand other things to be doing but this book captured my interest and kept me away from them all. (In fairness, I probably
... more wanted to play hooky with a good book anyway.)Jessamin is taking a short cut to the hotel where she lives and works when a dock worker decides she would enjoy his company. She is wondering if the small pairing knife she carries will be enough to discourage him when a young man of wealth and culture persuades the dock worker that Jessamin is with him. He then invites her to dinner. She accepts after a token refusal (she's hungry). Dinner is very good but Jess, who is from Melei has no desire to get involved with a young lord from Albion. All he would want from a dark skinned "savage" like her is a mistress. But Jess has misjudged Finn (Lord Ackerly). A young man gifted in magic he is also someone free of bigotry and the desire for Empire which so many men of his class dream of. He is also a powerful practitioner of magic. Unfortunately, he has equally powerful enemies. . . I thoroughly enjoyed this novel of magic and manners. Jess is a feisty heroine but in the best possible way. She may have more guts than sense sometimes but ultimately it is her sense that wins out. Finn is a hero to die for, patient, kind, assertive but willing to learn - he charmed me.The story of betrayals and how ultimately it is the small crimes we commit that come back to haunt us was engrossing. less

I had a really hard time finishing this book. I wasn't a fan of the characters or the story line.
