As I’ve mentioned before, I love a good paranormal romance, but I’m not just in it for the sex. In fact, it doesn’t have to have any sex as long as there’s chemistry and a good plot. The Shifter Romances the Writer by Kristen Painter is a clean romance with a hot alpha male and a HEA ending and I adored it. I will definitely be seeking out the rest of this series. I received this book in my Ever After March Sexy Shifters box, which I will review soon!
Roxy St. James is a paranormal romance writer who has moved to a town where it’s Halloween 365 days a year. She means to use it as inspiration, but little does she know that the creatures in her books are real and Nocturne Falls is home to a wide variety. As she’s settling in and waiting for her abusive ex to sign the divorce papers, she gets to know her sexy next door neighbor, cop Alex Cruz. What lengths will he go to in making sure she’s safe from the stalker leaving her creepy messages around town? Is it her ex trying to win her back or someone even more sinister? How will she react when she finds out Alex is a panther shifter?
Alex Cruz was sexy and protective without being overwhelming with his affections. While the attraction was instantaneous, the leading couple took some time to get to know each other and didn’t jump straight into the sack. I detest insta-love, so the progression pleased me. I was a little annoyed with the word “soulmate” being thrown around after a week of knowing each other. I think that would take more time to determine and it made some of the dialogue a little silly. I also thought Roxy jumped through her additional paranormal hoop (you’ll know when you read it) a little prematurely. However, the rest of the story was well-written and made up for it.
All in all, this was a fun read with likeable characters. I wish the town had come more into play because I love the idea of Halloween 24/7. I’m hoping it will work in more in the previous novels as I’m planning on seeking them out. This book was the 6th in the Nocturne Falls series, but it read just fine as a standalone. I recommend it to any adult readers who don’t need explicit sex in their romance novels, but love a good paranormal love story.
