review 1: As someone who is currently participating in NaNoWriMo, it's pretty much impossible to find any time to read. Having been stuck on the same novel for nearly two months, I decided I needed a change. I reached for this book that had been sitting on my shelf for at least a year in hopes that I'd be able to read it quickly. I finished in only an hour and a half and loved the storyThe Color of Earth tells the story of Ehwa and her widowed mother and the relationship between both girls as Ehwa is growing up. The drawings were beautiful, the story held my interest and was very adorable, and I loved the symbolism used with the flowers. If you're looking for a super quick read (like under two hours) and think manga is something that might fascinate you I would definitely recommend ... morethis graphic novel. I can't wait to read the other two in the series!
review 2: The drawings are lovely, both of the people and the natural world in which Ehwa, the main character, lives. The story is long on feeling and short on plot. Ehwa is a young girl living in a Korean village with her widowed mother who runs a tavern/eating house to support them. Most of the book is about the mother's sexual longings and affair with a traveling salesman and about how Ehwa gradually learns about her own sexuality and her romantic feelings for the son of the local rich family and for a young monk. Lots of flowery language but still quite blunt. The focus on "sexual awakening" got a big monotonous after a while but the author conveyed a lovely sense of place and feeling. less
