review 1: My rating: 2.5 starsWell, what can I tell you? The book was okay. It wasn't bad and it wasn't great, just something eh-ish in-between.A little background info. The story takes place in a fantasy city named Praesidium where rules are pretty hardcore. If you commit a crime, you become a bond-slave, which is like the lowest of the low in society. And if you commit a crime that's considered bad, you're put in Stasis, a state of being where you're neither dead nor alive.Ennek is the youngest son of the Chief (the ruler of their city) and so he doesn't really have any duties. He just sort of drifts through life, having nothing to worry about. Except the memory of a person in Stasis keeps haunting him. So he decides to do the unthinkable and busts the prisoner out. And to keep th... moree prisoner with him, he agrees to become the apprentice of the Wizard (the person who puts people in Stasis and is in general, evil). There isn't anything bad about Ennek or Miner, the prisoner. They're both decent characters. It's just that neither had anything particularly special about them. Yes, Ennek was a decent person and Miner was also a good person, but they didn't really the levels of great that I thought they totally could have. They were, to sum it up, average. Eh-characters: good but somehow bland.
review 2: Enjoyed this book a lot I will definitely be reading the next two in the series. I liked Ennek a lot I thought he was a cool character. The world was interesting for me to read about especially stasis which I found a little freaky. I had to put this book down a few times because of the slavery part of it but that was it. Miner was a great character I really liked him and I loved the effect he had on Ennek. Ennek was rather self-centred and didn't know what to do with himself until he met Miner and then he sort of seemed to have a purpose. I liked that just because he was the chief's son didn't mean he could do what he wanted. I liked the relationships between the characters. I think Kim Fielding did a great job to write this in a month. It was so easy to read and had calm, laid back feel to it which meant it was great to read before going to sleep. less
