review 1: Read in the Book Club in October 2014. Not a continuous story but more like a diary or memoirs. Detailed description of the experience of The Boat People from Vietnam. Sometimes shocking details of these refugees which make you feel disgusted and yet want to hail them as Life's heroes who beat all odds to come up ahead and achieve their American Dream. I recommend this book for reading just to know the realities of life for those unfortunate people who are end products of political differences in countries all over the world - the lost people.
review 2: A beautiful, beautiful book by a Vietnamese immigrant to Canada after the end of the Vietnam War. Extraordinary writing. Told in short vingettes, each one is linked to the last one by a few words. I was r
... moreeminded how, in conversation, we suddenly remember something else and slip effortlessly to a new subject. This book takes the reader across many years as Thuy tells her story of the scary boat ride away from her country, the misery of the camps, the poverty when starting over in Canada, but the incredible warmth and assistance they received from the townspeople. This is a book that stays with you. less
