review 1: Walt Disney World with Kids 2010 by Kim Wright Wiley (pp. 472)Touted as one of the best vacation guides to Walt Disney World, the title is a bit of mis-marketing. It really should be ‘An Overview of WDW with Some Age Related Content’ – but that title doesn’t sell books. The book never explicitly says it, but less than half the park attractions will be appropriate for 5 year olds and younger. She focuses on parades, shows, and expensive character dinner experiences to satisfy the youngster set. Really 7 to 10 seems to be the best age range based on the content provided. Wiley is clearly a Disney fan, but avoids talking about budgeting and cost strategies. The reality of the costs in today’s economy, the premium costs of Disney, and families trying to maximiz... moree their vacation dollar gets missed. She’s recommending it to everyone. But after reading the book, Chapter 0 should have been “How much should I budget? And What’s the best age ranges to take if I only go once?” She assumes that you and your family will go multiple times. There are people who do go every three years or live more locally, but as a vacation guide it seems more like consolidated list of reviews versus you’re a true travel guide. It’s just too generic. There’s no real decent recommendations for large group stays and the book never clearly states that a 2-bedroom suite that is common at many of the indoor water parks and theme hotels nationally will cost you $800-1000/night rack rate here.If you’re looking for a general overview of the property offerings and how to outline your must see attraction list while intermingling food offerings, this is a pretty good read. But you can probably save yourself the $17.99 by plunking down for 20 minutes at the bookstore and reading only the blue coded tips, the summary charts, and the reader submitted recommendations always included in quotation marks. Otherwise stick to Internet sites for your research or contact a travel agent to unravel the Disney experience a bit more.
review 2: I thought this was a very helpful guidebook about how to do Disney with kids. Wiley provides tips for different ages of kids and seems to know quite a bit of inside info. I especially like her easy-to-read lists of "Must-See" attractions for each park and the recommended minimum age for each attraction. I ear-marked several pages and plan to go back and review right before our Disney World trip next month. less
