review 1: This book met several criteria for my most enjoyable reads...a foreign country (Australia), historical fiction (half of it), the sea, suspense and romance. This novel travels in a back and forth method over a century, from 1901 to 2011, and between two love stories set in an Australian seaside town of Lighthouse Bay. (It seems that more authors are writing in this manner...whether in an alternating time period style, or alternating from different character points of view.) The story opens with a shipwreck in 1901 off the coast of Australia, with only one survivor, Isabella. The rest of "her" story focuses on who can trust and where she truly belongs. Over a century later, an artist, Libby, returns to her home in Lighthouse Bay and must navigate her dark past and heartac... morehe to attempt to reconcile with her sister. Both Isabella and Libby discover that only by leaving the past behind, can they discover what lies ahead. This was one of those rare books that I truly had a hard time putting down, and lost much sleep reading in the late night. I look forward to reading her earlier book, "Wildflower Hill", that also takes place in Australia.
review 2: I really enjoyed the 2011 storyline and the whole idea of tying it into the 1901 storyline, but I found the 1901 storyline somewhat annoying. I thought Isabella was a real pain in the ass and I didn't find myself rooting for her at all. The 1901 parts almost read like cheesy romance novels in some parts. It took me over a week to finish this, and towards the end I had to force myself to pick it up and keep going. less
