review 1: This ain't The Miracle Worker, which Elkins makes clear from the opening scene of her heroine meeting and being annoyed by Helen Keller. Well researched and beautifully told, this is the sensual yet intellectual story about an extraordinary woman and the time in which she lived. Elkins skillfully depicts Laura's famous contemporaries without making the novel feel like Forrest Gump. The narrative switches between different characters' POV, describing Laura from every angle. Gradually it becomes fiercely feminist, showing the varying imprisonments of and contentious relationships between different female characters. Laura doesn't beg for pity, she makes the reader ponder the meaning of humanity.
review 2: Intriguing fictional account of real deaf-blind person, La
... moreura Bridgman, who was apparently a very famous precursor to Helen Keller, but I had never heard of her before I read this book. It was interesting to read the historical perspective and all the interactions between the people, but mostly a sad story. I was impressed with Laura's strength as she grew up. It would seem that someone who can't see or hear would be quite helpless, but she could do more than I would have guessed, and she let people know what she really thought. I'm sure I would have been too afraid to do that, if I had been in her position. less
