review 1: As much as I liked the first book about Hattie (Hattie Big Sky), the setting of this book (San Francisco in 1919 vs Montana a year earlier) was much more appealing to me. As much as I loved Hattie's spunk and the details written into this historical fiction (I learned Campbell's Soups had 21 flavors from which Hattie chose most of her heated-on-a-hotplate-in-her-hotel-room meals0, it was Kirby Larson's commentary at the end of the book (yes, I listened to this book in my car, making it all the more astonishing that I am giving it 5 stars!) that made it a 5 star book. I loved hearing her talk about how much she loved doing the research--reading the old newspapers which she described as addicting. She "met" the ordinary women of that time when things really had begun to c... morehange for women. Hattie was just one of them. You will find this book in the Young Adult section of your library, but don't let that stop you from reading it. It's a fun one!
review 2: In this historical novel Nellie leaves Montana and the people she loves to try to become a reporter for a large town newspaper. Nellie struggles to get a foot in the door as this is a man's world. She meets her heroin, the famous newspaper woman Nellie Bly, along the way. Hattie struggles to choose between the man she loves back home and the career she wants in the city. This is an excellent novel about women's roles and the struggles a young person makes about becoming who she wants to be instead of who society says she should be. I enjoyed this book very much. less

Well written and researched, though a little far-fetched at times
