review 1: It wasn't great but it still wasn't bad. I felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions and also not half as dark as everyones making it out to be. The guy, Leo kind of went against what he said a lot. Like he'd say he needed a unwilling slave but then waited till she was completely willing?? The girl, Faith was very weak and at the end of the book i still didn't understand why she loved him or who see was as a character. I dont know maybe, it just wasn't for me.
review 2: The premise of this story was intriguing and reminded me of one of those ethical dilemma games, a "what would you do if _________?" situation. Leo is between a rock and a hard place when his brother offers him Faith - an innocent victim of circumstance - as a slave. If he doesn't take ... moreher, she dies, and if he does take her, she loses her freedom and the ability to make any choices in life. So, which is better, life in a gilded cage or death?I don't generally like Mafia stories, criminals don't make very good romantic heroes in my opinion. Leo wasn't an out and out criminal, but he sure as heck was no saint either. Fascinating conundrum and I enjoyed reading it. The writing was solid and character development strong. What I did find a bit tedious after awhile was Faith's cowering fear and Leo's moral angst and self hatred. Then again, these characteristics drove the story. Given Faith's horrible situation and how young she was (22), I couldn't really blame her. In all honesty, I probably wouldn't be much different and I don't have Faith's history of abuse. Leo's behavior was far more inconsistent - an illustration of the corruption caused by absolute power. Faith never knew if she was getting the kind Dr. Jekyll or the terrifying Mr. Hyde.
