review 1: I thought it was a great intro into starting to realize women have just as much of a place and voice in churches and marriages as men do. Kris is not a scholar and if you are looking for theological and scholarly arguments that have been thoroughly researched, this is not that book. It is simply a logical walk through of why the way the church approaches the issue of women is wrong. As long as you aren't reading just to knock down straw man arguments, you will get a lot out of this.
review 2: I give this book 3.5 stars. To be honest, I can't remember a book written in this style that I felt really strongly about (I only enjoy this kind of reading for its education merit, not the pleasure of the writing) but this is one of the best I've read of the genre, and it
... more's certainly a fresh and positive approach to the topic. I see it as the Christian side of feminism, and whether you agree or disagree with what Valotton writes, it'll get you thinking. He incorporates scripture very well and there's an appropriate amount of analysis. What bothers me most about these kinds of books, however, and this one is no exception, is emphasizing things that don't need to be emphasized by using WAY too much imagery to try to add to scripture (really, this just exasperates me when it's all just speculation and I don't need a 2 line verse to be turned into 10 so that you can try to evoke some empathy) and using a lot of exclamation points, making it feel sort of juvenile. Regardless, as I said, I didn't read it for the writing but for the content, and in that respect, it was good. I'm satisfied by my mind is not blown and I feel as if I might have been able to predict what kind of arguments he would make. Still, reading it is good to organize thought and promote structure. less
