review 1: I am puzzled by the rave reviews. While the premise is good, McMorris simply is not a good writer. First of all, I needed to get past the use of "body heaving romance novel" writing style that she used. Mercifully, she used it sparingly. But then, she simply didn't seem to have a grasp of normal human reactions. Either her characters displayed exaggerated or inappropriate reactions or none at all. I don't think McMorris realized she was painting the mother as an idiot. Finally, the ending was ambiguous - what did all this have to do with the main character, Jack?
review 2: While I generally liked the story, by the end I felt like it had become a hot mess. Audra is a loving mother, but she does nothing to deal with her own grief over the loss of her husband. Why
... more wasn't she in therapy? Further, as things spiral down with her son Jack, it seems he stops seeing a therapist. Poor choice! There's a non-existent relationship with her parents that is alluded to, but what does this have to do with the story? Audra cares deeply for her in-laws, but ceases to talk & share with them when the problems with her son Jack arise. Finally, the author really tries to tie everything up in a nice neat package at the end. It just doesn't ring true. less
