review 1: This is the first novel I can recall reading that used the first person present tense as a narrative voice. Most novels are written in past tense voice. It takes a bit of time to get used to it. But I found it very interesting the way it conveys the character's mood and state of mind. Definitely worth a writer's time to study this technique. Although I think the technique might work better for horror novels than sci fi.
review 2: I would have enjoyed this more but for the main character. The plot wasn't bad but she was a humorless, overly sensitive, control freak which made this story hard work as it was told from her point of view. With this viewpoint every pause, glance or sigh was fraught with meaning and the subtext in even simple statements was breathtak
... moreing. I found her trying to read about. I can't imagine why anyone would voluntarily join her on her missions. The other characters in the story seemed very flat to me. I don't know if this lack of insight was due to the protagonist's lack of people skills or the author's lack of writing skill. I'm inclined to believe the former. less
