review 1: I wish that the book were a little longer. The plot developed and occurred all within three pages. I do understand the purpose of the short story is not the story at all and that futuristic stories are generally criticisms of a contemporary culture, yet still, I would like liked to see the plot further explored. Maybe readers could have learned how other characters responded to a murder. I began wondering if murder was common in a society where others had to volunteer to die so that others could live. I also wondered if people were bribed, or their families, that if someone volunteered to live that the family would be taken care of financially or something. I think these explorations give a more complete view of the society Vonnegut created, as opposed to the unexplored pl... moreot readers are given.
review 2: I enjoyed the idea in this book, that after makimg a cure to eternal life, the consequence you have to suffer is not being able to reproduce unless someone else gives up their never ending life willingly. I would like to instead of it being a short story, see a novel been made because I would think that in having the low population, sure maybe everyone is content with life like that, but to me I would think we would get bored and nothing would ever change. I would think the crime rate would be high due to people, like in the short story here, would end up killing each other so they could have children. I also think maybe at first people would be happy knowing they will never die, especially people like me who do not know what will happen when we die. There are so many ways this story could go, which is also a part of what makes it so intriguing and Kurt Vonnegut a genious for making it a short story, so we people like me will continue to think about it. less
