review 1: I picked up Vonnegut - Novels and Stories 1963-1973. I began with Cat's Cradle and didn't finish it. I began Breakfast of Champions and didn't finish it. I read all of Welcome to the Monkey House. I am returning the book to the library without reading any further. I found his work to be listless and cold. I like a book with verve. Just because the subject matter - human stupidity, thoughtlessness and cold emotion - aren't the most upbeat, they can still be explored with verve. Wuthering Heights and All Quiet on the Western Front are examples of that.
review 2: Well . . . after re-reading Bluebeard I decided to re-read Breakfast of Champions (as I do every few years) and then thought I'd re-read God Bless You, Mr Rosewater, to which end I decided to check out th
... moreis new Library of America edition of KV's novels and stories just to see if it's something I'd like to own. So, I read the second half of Breakfast of Champions in this edition and then all of Rosewater and Cat's Cradle . . . at which point it seemed to silly not to finish off the rest of the collection. So, after reading some of the material in the Appendices (most of it dealing with the bombing of Dresden: a letter from Vonnegut written before he returned from WWII, an unpublished essay written after the war, and two forewords written for reprints of Slaughterhouse-Five, as well as a speech) I have begun re-reading Slaughterhouse-Five itself for the fifth or sixth time. After that, three stories . . . Meaning I will have read 848 pages of Vonnegut in about a month. Which is pretty much what happened when I first read him almost 30 years ago. less

Actual rating is 2.5 - could not fully appreciate the sci-fi tangents.
