review 1: Pretty good extrapolation of wearable technology. I had to suspend my understanding of the brain machine interface to get past the hand waving of how the connection work, with quotes such as, 'and then I thought, why not connect directly to the brain?'. But, this is SciFi. And a Covert One story, so the main premise is about the strife within government agencies on how to apply this technology. I can't see the government ever saying, 'OK, we will allow you to hook your device directly to our soldier's brains, and allow you direct access to the software, and allow you to lock us out of the core code.' But all in all, this was a fun read.
review 2: The topic of The Utopia Experiment is the next logical step beyond accessing the internet with computers or G-glasse
... mores-- direct input. How could a new tech like that be used and abused?Jon Smith, one of the military's top medical men is appointed to investigate this new technology by the genius, Christian Dresner, who's entire career has been dedicated to helping humanity. The technology promises to become life-changing / world-changing; helping the deaf to hear and the blind to see, literally, besides giving everyone a direct mental link to the internet. Smith's job is to determine the military possibilities of The Merge. His tests prove that a Merge-equipped military would be near-invincible against un-Merged enemies. Soon millions of people around the world are using the new technology. But it's not just about the hardware. The software that runs on it is able to make complex judgements about the integrity, honesty and goodness of each user based on every database on the internet, and to inform and warn every user about everyone's goodness rating.Smith also has a secret job on the Covert One team. Their investigations have found other disturbing facts about the Merge that the public doesn't know: the entire OS is a black box controlled by the secretive Dresner; and the Merge not only connects everyone to the internet, but it connects Dresner to everyone. As a person who is very interested in tech developments, the topic had me from the beginning. And the story worked very well for me. I really liked the book. It was an easy read that kept me hooked. Most chapters were crafted as complete scenes with a start-middle-end. And most of the chapters ended with a nice hook into the next chapter. And, as an aspiring writer, I was interested in learning from Kyle Mills writing style. It was a good lesson, and a great book. less
