review 1: At times, this was an oddly disjointed read. We seemed to spend 90% of the book faffing around about a zillion miles away from getting anywhere near anticipating the "baddie" (not even a whiff of a foreshadow), as it were... and then BAM, out of somewhere well beyond left field, and with as much subtlety as a wrecking ball, the suspenseful plot completely unravels into "OHHAI I'M THE GUY YOU'RE AFTER, and BY THE WAY, you had zero inkling of who I was at all, because I wasn't so much as thought about by an errant character throughout the entire book." So that was disappointing. There were also several glaring character discrepancies to do with the culprit of the crimes, and it makes the abrupt and surprising reveal at the end even more strange and unfitting.Along with that,... more I was confused at times about the time period this was supposed to be set in. I mean, we have mentions of Facebook, and other fairly current things... and yet we can't apparently internet search on our cell phones, and people in the criminal professions aren't apparently aware of what clinical trials are? Strange.I'll probably give the second one a go, but this wasn't the best of this genre that I've read...
review 2: This was my first book this author and it was OK. Typical romantic - suspense where the cop falls in love. The only thing that was slightly different was the female love interest wasn't a victim, she was a strong character who was pulled in to help the cop solve a case. Abbie Phillips is a criminal profiler who works for a notorious ex FBI agent/profiler named Adam Raiker who started a company called Mindhunters, which is an elite group of profilers like Abbie. That part really interested me, I love the criminal profiling and how those people get inside the minds of the sick and twisted rapists/murderers/sickos.It starts off with Ryne the cop being none too happy to have Abbie recruited to help him and his team catch a vicious serial rapist. Through the course of them working together, naturally they fall for each other. The romantic aspect was OK, the love scenes nothing spesh, but I liked it nonetheless. I really enjoyed the suspense/mystery, which was front and center in this book. Freaky creepy stuff, kept my focus and kept the book in my mind even when I wasn't reading. There were several things that bothered me, but they were minor. First off, the names were odd: Ryne and there was a beat cop with the last name Wilhm. I hate when I try to pronounce the names because annoyingly, I do it out loud and my husband looks at me like I'm a complete moron. Ryne is easy to pronounce, it was Wilhm I didn't know. Secondly, the word appreciably is used over and OVER. "He didn't smile appreciably", "The comment didn't lighten his mood appreciably ", "The chances of catching him diminished appreciably ". I don't want to hear that word for a while. The last thing, SCMPD was referred to time and again. I got the gist of it, Savannah - something - something - Police Department, since the location of the book was in Savannah and they worked from a police department. I had to Google it because it bothered the heck out of me not knowing what it meant. I would have really appreciated it being explained in the book. I don't mind the use of initials for things, as long as the less commonly used ones are explained. It wouldn't have been hard to slip Savannah - Chatham Metro Police Department in there to appease my neurotic brain. All in all, pretty good book. I will most likely finish out the series, since it will have more of the criminal profiling which I love so much. less
