review 1: Generally I'm not a big fan of angsty books so I hesitated to read this one that, according to the blurb, features two MCs who are dealing with having been sexually abused as children. Needn't have worried. Maybe I wasn't feeling it today for some reason, because plenty of other reviews described it as emotional, heartbreaking, etc, while I just read the whole story without my emotions even twitching. Yes their stories were sad, but I didn't feel it. I think I was expecting some really messed up characters, like Avery from Out Of The Blackness, but although they both said they had problems I didn't really see much evidence of it. What I did like, loved even, was Pepper Jack. I really wish more of the story was set at the dance club, because I wanted more of Dare's alter eg... moreo. Also, Xylophone as the title? I really didn't think the Xylophone was that significant.
review 2: Two men who've had their lives turned upside down by pedophile abuse are drawn together over their common issues and slowly begin to help each other to heal. I like the way the author handled the telling of their stories through limited flashbacks and emotionally healing and helpful discussion with each other. And I liked the fact that both men admitted eventually that they did need to seek further treatment and therapy and couldn't just rely on the healing they've found with each other. Dare and Jonah are a great couple, one of my favorites, and I was left feeling very hopeful for their future both individually and together as a couple. less
