review 1: Gunnar Rutledge has one driving force that keeps him going: To make d’Bussy pay. After the death of his father in d’Bussy’s tournament, Gunner’s family is torn apart. The mourning over his father is quickly magnified as d’Bussy comes back to take his mother as his own. When she refuses, her throat is slit in front of the young Gunner and he is also left for dead. With the destruction of his family and the devastation of his lands, Gunner has nothing left to live for but revenge.Raina d’Bussy enjoys a privileged life full of the finer things that her beloved doting father has always provided for her. When a new man enters town, he manages to turn her head and leave her breathless. Much to the chagrin of her long time childhood friend Nigel who had plans of... more marrying her. He warns her away from Gunnar who is more dangerous than she could ever imagine. Gunner had not intended to take the daughter of his sworn enemy hostage, but she quickly becomes the best means of getting to her father. He will not stop until he has slain the man who murdered his parents. He fails to take into account how breathtaking, beautiful, and tender hearted d’Bussy’s daughter is. As he gets to know her, will he still be able destroy her life in the same way her father destroyed his? Is all fair in love and war? With lives on the line, both Gunnar and Raina must decide who can be trusted and who will only betray. This is a well written and enjoyable novel. A bit predictable, but entertaining none the less. The characters are well developed and likable and the story is interesting.Lara Adrian does an excellent job narrating this novel. Her voice is light and pleasant and she adds character to the narration.
