review 1: This thought provoking Freshman novel was a good read. I was invested in the character's conflicts. I liked the variety and eccentricity of the characters, especially Bear. I did not like the ending, as it leaves the reader hanging in regard to one unresolved question, and I think the author could've answered that one question, satisfying the reader more at the end. Well written and I hope she continues to write. I read this as an option for our Mother Daughter Book Club. I liked that it didn't simplify intense issues of faith, and that it didn't wrap everything together nicely with a "happily ever after" at the end.
review 2: I did have to say I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It had some things that are normally not discussed in any YA settings and I have to g... moreive it to Zielin for doing a great job with it! We see conflict with religion and what it means to go out and break out of your shell. Her parents are both extremely religious, so religious in fact that the money they’ve been saving up for college has to go toward a religious school. She then decided to try and write a story and win the grand prize of a scholarship to be able to go to school. While she does this she meets a colorful amount of people that show her what it means to go out and live your life for you. This book was just so incredibly sweet. It made me laugh and cry at the same time. I was rooting for Emma the entire time and it just makes me feel so honored to read such a good humored book like this. Props to Zielin for this wonderful book and I will def be looking out for more books! I give this one 4 out of 5 paws. less
