review 1: I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway and was delighted when it arrived in the mail. As a novel, it has a lot of great elements - the two main characters have a tragic background they're trying to move past, the creepy old house is a great setting for things to happen, and you have a whole town of people to draw from. I liked the author's writing style - lots of descriptions, you could really picture the house and settings, and I liked having the point of view shift between the different characters. The story is fast paced and events unfold quickly. But, unfortunately, I found the ending to be a big let down. There are not enough explanations for the home's architecture, the ghosts, the villainous actions, how certain characters are tied together, or really anything... more else. I really liked the book, up until the last 50 pages or so!! But, come on, the ending of a mystery should give the reader answers. This one left me scratching my head. Give it a chance, see if you disagree.
review 2: I liked the author's writing style. She used many beautiful turns of phrase, and the book did hold my interest. However, I did find the plot and characters to be a bit too predictable and cliched. The villains of the book were obviously villains from very early in the story, and I would have preferred for there to be some mystery about that. The story follows the course of so many other "haunted house" books; there was nothing really original here. Still, it was an entertaining read, and I would definitely try another book by this author. less

Unsatisfactory ending - too much left unexplained.
