Call of the Wilde
review 1: Grace Wilde is a veterinarian, an animal behaviorist and has a psychic ability to communicate with animals. Grace doesn't practice as a veterinarian because she can feel the animals emotions very strongly when they are being treated. The book starts off with a bang with an episode concerning a lemur named Kiki. She receives a phone call to come to a murder scene where a dog was distressed. He just witnessed his owner's murder. This starts the storyline of Grace becoming involved in solving the mystery and working with the dog at the scene.I chose to read this book due to the great customer reviews. I wasn't sure that a book about a psychic ability to communicate with animals would not go over the top for me. I found the book to be well written and quite original The commun... moreication between Grace and the animals was telepathic and not out loud conversations. The characters were likable. I think anyone would love a sister like Emma. Grace had spunk and she chooses to hide her ability from almost everyone. The mystery portion had twists and turns. I think this will be a long running series as it was original, entertaining and a very good read. Readers of cozies, paranormal cozies with animals should like this book and future books in the series.
review 2: Apparently it's a trend now that a lot of cozy mysteries have to have some kind of supernatural element. Normally, I don't care for that. In fact, earlier this week I read PANTHERS PLAY FOR KEEPS by Clea Simon and it had the same premise as this one, an animal behaviorist who can talk to the animals gets involved in a murder. That said, I have to admit that this one had much better execution. The writing and dialogue were snappier and the murder less easy to solve. Frankly, I think this story would've worked just as well without the pet psychic angle, but what do I know? I enjoyed the characters and I especially liked how close Grace was to her animals. I think many of us can relate to that without actually having a psychic link. less
