review 1: This book sucks you in, like seriously. it is so GOOD. SPOILERS AHEAD BE WARNED. I have been wanting this book forever, so i ordered off of amazon and read it in one night (get it one night ha) but anyway this book is amazing. the book starts off with this girl named Eliza (who in my head was Selena Gomez I don't why i just thought of her as the character) who has lost her top secret journal where she writes all her fears and thoughts and things she wishes she could do. Her ex-boyfriend, Cooper(who again in my head appears to be Zac Efron, i don't think you need to know this but oh well)and his friends steal it because of her telling their principle about their dudes only sorority type of deal and gets him kicked out of this college he was supposed to go to only because he... more used her to get into the club in the first place. then comes in the roller coaster ride where she has to listen what the guys as as they blackmail her into doing what she wrote in the diary, along the way she gets help from her ex who guides and helps her way into the dares and her friends. Throughout the book Eliza is cynical towards Copper because of what he did and doesn't want to get close to him again because she's afraid of loving him and getting hurt again. NOT SPOILING THE ENDING The ending of the book really just shows what the whole story is about as it is about this girl who is stuck and basically in control of the diary/journal which is holding her back on what she wants to do when it comes to the ending it really symbolizes her relationships and everything and by doing what she does to the diary just shows that all her fears are gone and she's not scared any more. Barnholdt really makes these unique and relate-able characters and an amazing, page-turning storyline that makes you want to know what will happen next as each chapter ends on a cliffhanger. it is similar to those cheesy stories where the girl's diary gets stolen or something but this was a really unique book and it added many twist and turns which some of those cheesy stories don't have. OVERALL: overall i give this book a A because the characters stayed true to themselves, it had a mixture of everything like romance, action, mystery, and i thoroughly enjoyed it.
review 2: 3.5 starsSo basically, despite this being a book of what not to do at a party/in a night out situation (leaving friends places, drinking mysterious drinks out of open containers...) I found it relatively entertaining. I still want to know what Eliza was talking about when she said other people's secrets and stuff were in the notebook. Her having kissed Kate's boyfriend at the time doesn't really seem like someone else's secret it just seems like her secret that may hurt someone else. Like, this girl ran around the Boston-Newton area all night for this notebook, it should've had something more interesting in it than wanting to sing karaoke or kiss an old crush and a bunch of fears from a 12 year old. Also, this is me being super nitpick-y but as someone who lives where the book was taking place, it would be pretty hard to get from Newton to Newbury Street in under 10 minutes. less
