review 1: I enjoyed the premise of this book, the message was sweet, and the characters were fun. But it was a little twee for me, and the dangers were resolved a bit too conveniently. Perhaps I was expecting a book aimed at a slightly older audience, or maybe the premise led me to expect a bit of a darker book. It was more happy and upbeat than I thought it would be, and that's not a bad thing, it's just not what I expected.
review 2: Liesl's father has been dead three days when Po, a ghostly visitor from "the other side" arrives in her room, the attic space in which she's been locked by her stepmother. A web of seemingly unrelated characters are introduced and woven together as Liesl receives a message from her father which spurs her into action. Magic intersects with
... moregrief and loneliness, bringing hope into a world drained of sunshine by an apothecary's costly potion. Villains and innocent mistakes keep the plot twisting. less
