review 1: The story of Dara and Nick and their intense sisterly bond completely absorbed me. I mean, this is the type of book that could keep you up all night dying to get to that final page. Their story is revealed in two parts - before and after a terrible car accident that left them both forever changed in a variety of ways. There's also an underlying story here of a young girl who is presumed kidnapped in their small town. It all comes together at the end...but, there's a twist. And the twist is a technique that seems to be climbing the popularity scale in recent teen books. Sometimes it pays off, but in this case I think the story could have stood alone without it and been better for it. The story itself and the writing is so compelling and the build-up so great that I desper... moreately wanted to see it through and not have this twist thrown in totally knocking down everything that had come before it. I get what Oliver's intentions were, but I really, really wanted that other story to come to life.
review 2: Sisters Nick and Dara were best friends growing up but started growing apart in high school when Dara embraced popularity. After a wreck leaves Nick with temporary amnesia and Dara disfigured, the relationship is further fractured. The novel is also focused on the disappearance of a neighborhood girl, Madeline - which eventually does tie into the Nick and Dara plotline but feels like a orphaned plot until then. Nick spends much of the book trying to track down Dara and figure out what has made Dara change so much. The huge plot twist near the end will leave readers re-reading prior passages to look for missed clues. less
