review 1: This is #8 in the Pink Carnation series. I had heard of the series and was able to pick up a used copy and was glad I did. Historical fiction and romance are my favorite genres and this story encompasses both. Laura Grey poses as a governess in France after attending the Selwick spy school. She enters the Andre Jaouen family's household, but finds things are not as they seem. The story flows very easily and grabs you right from the start. There is another modern day story entwined of a researcher doing a dissertation of the family. I found that modern day story to be somewhat of a distraction, enjoying when it returned to the early 1800's. I'll definitely go back and read others of the series. This story was based on real characters and many of the buildings exist ... moretoday.
review 2: Another excellent edition to the Pink Carnation series! Laura is a spirited heroine that is brave, intelligent and can think on her feet. The on going question of whether or not her employer, Andre, is a good or bad man is resolved in a satisfying way. The book's conclusion is equally satisfying. The choice of France for a setting was an great jaunt out of jolly old England and the surprise reappearance of a past hero in said France is great. less
