review 1: I loved reading this book! I am going to go and get the sequel to it (disappointed that it left me hanging). I did not want to put this book down because I wanted to find out what happened next. I feel for Isabel and Ruth because they are supposed to be free, but they get sold to a kind of mean lady. This book has an infusion of history imbedded into its storyline. Isabel is a very brave girl because she becomes a spy and she takes punishment for when her sister misbehaves and when she goes missing. I loved see the relationship between Isabel and Curzon grown. This novel was not only enjoyable to read, but was also informative about that time in history. I cannot believe the treatment that Isabel and Ruth must go through. They are very strong people. Their master is ev... moreen mean to her own family. I feel a little for her because she is also abused, but still she is very harsh. This book had me on the edge of my seat throughout reading it and I cannot wait to get Forge.
review 2: The book, Chains, by, Laurie Halse Anderson is a Historical fiction book. It is about Isabel, a slave. Her dad was killed, her mom taken by small pox, and her younger sister Ruth was sold. Ruth was all Isabel had and now she was gone. She was angry at her owner, Madam Lockton and stood up to her. Madam hit her with a painting and ran into her room. However Becky, the house maid, opened the door to let Isabel escape to her freedom. she ran and she was caught. as a punishment they brand with the letter I. ever since then, Isabel, gives information to the loyalists and patriots, feeds the captured Americans, saves Lady Seymour from a fire and gets beaten by Madam Lockton. She was originally supposed to be released by a will. Will she get freedom? This book is in my lexile range. my favorite part of the book is the part when she gets mad at Madam because, it shows the love she has for her sister. I recommend this book to people who like Historical fiction. less
