review 1: John and his mother are ostracized by the neighbors in their village. They call his mother a witch. One day their hut is burned down and tthey escape. During the winter his mom dies, but not before she has taught him how to read and a lot ofher recipes. John is found by a man who brings him to someone. John is accepted into the kitchen and a newworld opens up to him. All set durong the English Civil War.
review 2: Not sure what I think of this book. Some parts held my interest, some didn't. The storyline seems somewhat convoluted. Not sure if that was because it really was, or because I lost interest at times and missed ideas. I am glad I read this but it wasn't an 'I can't put down' book. Perhaps, the fact that it takes place in the 1600's and I didn't qu
