review 1: Cohen is on the faculty in my low-residency MFA program, and I wish that I had had the chance to take a seminar from her. I've also read her previous book, The Grief of Others, and this one was equally gripping and beautifully crafted. I am giving it 4 stars because of the ending, which I own't spoil for others. But I wonder if it was meant to illustrate just how unknowable others can be--even the ones we think we know most intimately, and who unsettle what we think we know about ourselves.
review 2: The writing was so beautiful that the plot is secondary. Brother and sister grow up in a place that use to be a progressive school run by the father. The school went bust but the family still lives there. The brother has some form of Aspergers. Years go by and the
... moresiblings lose touch. The sister's spouse hears on the radio that her brother who is now 30 is suspected of killing a 12 year old boy. A gem. less

This book dragged endlessly. So much wallowing and going nowhere.

A great read. The jacket leaf summary says it all.
