review 1: Red, White, and Boom was about a Fourth of July celebration with a parade, beach fun, picnics, and fireworks in a town. The "rockets wing crackle, sing burst and zoom red, white, and boom!" I chose this as the winner for the Caldecott award because I thought the illustrations were very well presented and literal through out the whole book. It was easy for a young child to imagine going to the fireworks on July 4th. Out of all the other 2012 children picture books that I looked through and read while at the library, I found this the most touching, every child can relate to watching the fireworks at one point in their lives, even if it's from looking out the window at night in July.
review 2: Lee Wardlaw's newest title celebrates America and the 4th of July, but
... morethe book could really be used with young readers and writers to invite creative verb usage. Take another look at those simple lines: Bugles callFifers trillFrisbie flipsFireflies flitandSparklers spitThere's really a lot going on this book for description and depiction that deserves a closer look.Middle grade readers might look at writing in the list poem or couplet forms after sharing this book.Huy Voun Lee's paper cut illustrations remind me of Melanie Hope Greenberg's style. As others are citing here at Goodreads, the depiction of multiple cultures within the book is something to celebrated here! A beautifully packaged book! less
