review 1: This book started out very slowly for me. In fact, I had started it months ago, stopped and only recently started it again, this time finishing it. I listened to the audio version and the beginning was just not that engaging for me. The further along I listened, though, the more I became involved in the story and enjoyed it.The story begins in SC in pre-Civil war times. Young Jessica, an abolitionist daughter of a slave owner, is sold into marriage to a man (Silas Toliver) who wishes to move to the newly-formed Texas to make his fortune.The book follows the life of Jessica, her husband, her children & grandchildren as they, along with the DuMonts & Warwicks settle and found the town of Howbutker, TX. Jessica was brave and mature beyond her years. Reading of her and other a... morebolitionists makes one wonder if we would have the same courage to stand up to the evil of slavery when it was so dangerous to do so.There is plenty of heartache, joy & soul-searching for the characters. There is also an interesting retelling of the history of that time period. All in all, an enjoyable book although a bit long.
review 2: I read this book because I enjoyed "Roses". This is the prequel to that story and the love story of the main characters, Silas and Jessica is endearing. The history of their family follows plus an almost pedantic review of the history of Texas and the rest of the country. I do like history but I believe parts of the book could have been more interesting but was mired down in trying to get everything about the nation into the story. less
