review 1: A good debut novel by an excellent short story writer. On the plus side, she displays considerable technical mastery: the writing is vivid and there are no dull spots, while she juggles a complicated narrative timeline with aplomb. On the debit side, the novel is centered on an annoyingly narcissistic protagonist. I usually don't believe you have to "like" the central character in a novel, but some degree of empathy is necessary, and Quinn's grating self-absorption eroded mine all too quickly. But make no mistake––the book is extremely readable, and has many effective moments.
