review 1: In its early pages this book did remind me so much of Jane Austen's Emma and the relationship between Emma and Mr Knightley. Was Tolstoy inspired by the same? Who knows? But no cloying happy ever after here.It is a book of its time and the male dominance is somewhat jarring as is the female submissiveness but the irritations arising between the couple are interesting and recognisable. The goading for and argument to relieve the tension and irritation, the apparent inability to express ones frustrations. Been there, done that. Not sure I am happy about the return to submissiveness, a wish on Tolstoy's part perhaps?
review 2: It was amazing! My first foray into Tolstoy's work did not disappoint; this is the first book I would describe as an emotional roller-coaster
... more! Stylistically, it was fascinating as Tolstoy tells the story from the view of the girl in the relationship. As a guy, this made reading the book all the more interesting, and of course I don't really speak from experience, but I think Tolstoy did a spot-on job of crafting his characters in a very realistic way. It's only about a hundred pages, so I recommend it to anyone who has a few hours of free time. less

I read this about ten years ago, so my memory of the exacts is small, however, I do remember being enthralled and I have considered this a favorite of mine since reading it. I think the characters were drawn so realistically that one can't help but feel for them and understand their plight in the end. This lead me to read more Tolstoy, and I haven't looked back since. He will always be a master of literature in my mind.

It puts words, romanticism and conclusion to everyday life. Noble, fragile and classic

I loved this story! I think that everyone should read it before they get married.

Un piccolo capolavoro. Dovrebbero leggerlo tutti quelli che stanno per sposarsi
