review 1: Gives an excellent overview of western philosophy from the pre-socratic period up to the modern era. The book selects a number of the pre-eminent philosophers and gives a brief overview of them and their thoughts. It is written in an entertaining and easy to understand manner, so even those with little to no understanding of philosophy could understand the text. The only downside of the book is that it is quite shallow when it comes to explaining some of the philosophical principles and leaves out depth with some of the more difficult ideas. However, as an introductory text to philosophical thinkers this book is ideal.
review 2: This book fails to stand up to its title. I Think, Therefore I Am is constructed from very short, usually a 2-3 page overview of e
... moreach of the world's most famous philosophers and their work. Obviously, from such superficial summaries you will not learn "all the philosophy you need to know".Don't get me wrong, this book is well written, and at times even amusing; I'm just somewhat undecided as to what can be learned from it. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this book even to people who are interested in a short glimpse to the world of philosophy. less
