review 1: Dewey Mariss and his four siblings have promised to keep the family bike repair shop running after a fuel drought strands their parents on vacation. They struggle to keep up with the onslaught of jobs as more people begin riding bicycles due to the fuel shortage. Although resource conservation is not overtly discussed, the novel’s setting provides a subtle message about the importance of finding alternate means of transportation before a real-life crisis hits.
review 2: Way back in the 70’s there was a gas crisis and we had to ration fuel. There were long lines, and people were given specific days they could go to the pump. I remember this. Just getting to work was a big problem. People were pretty much stuck at home. I made the mistake of going to N
... moreapa and getting stuck up there waiting in line for a gas pump to open. It could happen again, and even worse. This book imagines a time when the gas ran dry and everyone rode bikes. The highway was a a huge bike path. The good news is that Dewey and his family had a small bike repair shop. The bad news is that their parents are stuck out of town and everyone wants their bike repaired. Oh and by the way they have twin 5 year olds to attend to as well. This adds up to a lot of stress. What a CRUNCH! This story ends up being a mystery when bike parts from the store are stolen. How will Dewey and his brother deal with all the work, handling the upset customers and finding the thief until there is gas and their parents return home.Booklegged for Grade 6 less
