review 1: I bought this book because the reviews were good and because Lily King is a fellow Maine writer, but it took me a while to start reading because it was a novel about anthropologists! But listen, once I finally dove in I was hooked after the first paragraph. King draws you into her fictional world by making the language and the details and dialogue so compelling that you can't help developing a real connection with the characters. She also has that magical something that Hemingway had that leaves you with a deep feeing of nostalgia for the time and place of the story.
review 2: After seeing this book on Goodreads list of best novels of the year, I decided it would be worth investigating. I'm so glad a copy was available at the library on short notice. Not having... more much background on Margaret Mead, Lily King's book was a nice teaser into investigating more about this ground breaking anthropologist in the 1930s. I have to say King's book was quite loosely based on some of Mead's work and relationships but there were definitely parts of the book that rang true according to Mead's biography. The reason for the four stars instead of five, centers around my desire for more information about the tribes they were studying in New Guinea. While well written, the descriptions were not as developed as I had hoped. There was much more to reveal about the study of the tribes and their customs but instead the focus was on the growing relationship between Nell and Bankson, another anthropologist. In other words, the novel leaned more toward fiction/love story than historical information and I generally prefer the reverse. For those of you who enjoyed your cultural anthropology course in college, this may be a book you'd enjoy. less
