review 1: Reading this book is akin to watching an oncoming train wreck. Realistically, you know it can't end well, yet you keep looking/reading. Gardiner Amory is the life of the party, everyone loves him. But he is not a nice person. Daley is his daughter who can't let go of the idea that if her father would just sober up long enough, he would realize how meaningful a relationship with her could be. She feels as if everyone - her mother, her brother, her step-mother and family have all abandoned her dad, and she is determined to be the one who is there for him no matter what the cost. See what I mean about the train-wreck thing? The writing is so good though, one keeps on plowing through, suppressing the desire to give Daley a good shake and then throw the book across the r... moreoom. The reader keeps hoping, for Daley's sake. Interesting, aggravating and thought-provoking.
review 2: This is an outstandingly powerful book. Lily King is a master of storytelling. Her writing is superb with vivid imagery, acute descriptions and dialogue. It becomes evident from the first few pages that King is a keen observer of people, places and things. In Father of the Rain Daley Amory, the protagonist confronts her tumultuous relationship with her vain father while trying to rationalize her chaotic, insecure adolescence and her neatly planned yet insecure adulthood. This is a love story of the most complex kind and like all love stories hurdles are there to be confronted. For Daley her story is one of choices - to jump the hurdles or go around them. I couldn't help thinking of Updike's Rabbit Run Series as he explored the Bostonians. King like Updike delves into the psyches of her characters emphasizing their sense of superiority, their alcoholism, their marital contracts, and their stereotypical sexual attitudes. And, all the time, King respects and offers her gentle consideration. I highly recommend this book! less

Brutal, and well-written. Excellent fucked up family dynamics story.
