review 1: I am on a constant quest to find women writers who speak in stories I can relate to. In Hogan I feel I have found such a writer. Hogan does not shy away from the victimization inherent in her Native character’s lives, but it is with great elegance that she recognizes the circumstances that bring individuals and cultures to the disorienting places in which we find ourselves today. Here, Hogan weaves the stories of Native Americans into the story of the Vietnam War. People of the Whale draws parallels between a struggling coastal Native American village of the A’atsika Nation and a war torn Vietnamese village. Hogan emphasizes the human need for connection with the natural world while she questions how we define our loyalties and ideologies. I find such territory o... moreften difficult to navigate, but with Hogan as a guide I covered new ground regarding the ideas of what it means to be accountable to a family, a people, a history, a future, and a place. Filled with beautiful imagery, a new perspective on old stories, stand alone one-liners, and believable characters that kept me invested, this is one of those books that makes me feel good for having read it. review 2: Very moving, captivating. Hogan created a challenging setting and main characters (Thomas and Ruth) and made them real. With difficulty and some unevenness, she transcended time and place, blurring the lines (if any) between earth, water, and spiritual worlds. Thomas, Ruth, Marco, Aurora, and other characters were quite believe-able.In "Power" (a novel), Hogan also deals with the issue of killing an animal -- in this case, the Florida panther which is "considered to be a sacred ancestor of the Taiga people." I highly recommend this novel. less

This book is like poetry. It brings us so close to what life is like for one who was in Vietnam.
