review 1: I can't help but contrast this with Olsson's first, amazing novel, Astrid & Veronika. Although they're both written with beautiful, flowing, emotionally absorbent prose, I connected with the first but not the second. This one was a bit more difficult for me to love for a few reasons; primarily narrated by a man, the novel contained nothing but death and a series of life-changing and strange decisions. I couldn't feel for Adam what I could feel for Astrid or Veronika and I think that's because I find my life more similar to those characters than to Adam's. Also, Cecilia, Adam's estranged lover, was completely jumbled and the oddest sort of woman to make him choose between herself and their baby. I smiled to read that it wasn't a choice at all and Adam left Cecilia to her sol... moreitary, rape-memory island. This weekend being Mother's Day only drives home that Cecilia had problems serious enough that she couldn't even pretend to be a mother.A warning is warranted if you don't like reading about a child's death. The body count is two and both are horrible. The girl is 17. The boy is 4.This book reminds me of being on a diet and eating a cream-filled chocolate éclair; it's beautiful and the experience of eating it is memorable and enjoyable, but afterwards you feel horrible and wonder why you did that to yourself. Three and a half stars.
review 2: (Audiobook) Linda Olsson can write. This story was like a smoothly flowing river. All the words were just right, the elegence of prose, the purpose and force, moved this story along. I was wrapped up and engulfed all at the same time. Why only three stars, because the story never came together for me. I was lost with some of the connections between characters, especially Cecilia and Adam. I really never understood what had happened between them. But as far as Adam, his search, his discoveries, and the people whom he meets and befreinds, what wonderful and rewarding exprences. less
