review 1: There are a number of readers who rate this book as four or five stars for good reason. Its a three for me. For me, the writing wasn't as engaging as Olsson's first novel, "Astrid and Veronika." The story takes place in New Zealand, Poland and Sweden. It reflects the impact of traumatic experiences on future generations. The inability for people to talk to one another about tough topics was of interest to me. Its a prevalent challenge that most of us encounter some time in life. For the main characters it was pervasive as a cancer taking important aspects of their lives. That said, perhaps for me its 3.5.
review 2: I was excited to hear that Linda Olsson had published a second novel, I had liked Astrid and Veronika so much. Perhaps it was my mood, but
... moreI did not like this on as much. The narrator is a man, and the setting is New Zealand, Poland and Sweden. The story is interesting, and deals some with Jews in Poland after WWII as well as non communicative relationships. I am glad I read it, but wished the characters would/could talk to each other more. The story evolves in an interesting way and there are mysteries not divulged until the end. Despite my misgivings, I am glad that I read it. less
