review 1: This was a good book about a girl whose mother is afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia. They never explicitly state this in the book. It is fascinating to see her mother succumb to this illness through the eyes of someone so young. It is also interesting to see how her mother's illness very differently affects both of her daughters. The time period the book takes place in is the 1980s and Schlossberg does a very good job painting a vivid picture of this time period. Every little detail is in place – the clothes, the hair, the music, the television and movies. It brings back memories for those who lived through the decade, and immediately transports the reader into the story. Some authors cannot write from a young person/child's perspective...it just seems stilted and fo... morerced. That's not the case here. The main character is written in first person, and she, her thoughts and her friendships are very realistic. Also, the ending really surprised me. I recommend this book.
review 2: One of the best books I have very read, the characters are so REAL in this novel. I found this in the Library one day and I was like what the who, turns out it was a GREAT decision! The book is written from the little girl's point of view, and it is a amazing how the author mange to make her innocent and yet adult at the same time. I think this book should win any type of award possible. It really makes you think about life at large. I would recommend to anyone!!! less
