review 1: A kind of a tragic novel, tracing the conflicted life of a decent yet conflicted priest striving to be faithful in a conflicted and troubled church. You can't help but like the protagonist, even as he's making decisions that are so clearly problematic. While I suspect this novel probably fuelled the anti-church (and specifically anti-Roman Catholic church...) biases of some, I think it might well be used as required reading in seminaries, Catholic and otherwise.

I enjoyed experiencing the turmoil a priest might feel, given the revelations which are now coming to light. Reading this book made me eager to read his next book, Why Men Lie, in which we are reintroduced to the characters in his earlier novel. less
