review 1: What can I say?Tikaya and Rias finally get to her island only to find her family and the rest of her people are less than thrilled to find the scourge of their people amongst them.As Rias tries to build a submarine for them to explore ancient civilisations they find sabotage and hostility at every turn from Tikaya's family and the government. Added to which Tikaya's ex-fiancée is telling his usual half-truths to anyone who will listen.I read these slightly out of order because I read the entire Emperor's Edge series before the Encrypted series but it didn't spoil it for me.I just can't believe it took me so long to get around to reading them!I didn't think that anyone could take Sicarius' place in my heart by Rias is giving him a run for his money.
review 2: I
... more really loved Encrypted when I read it last year. It was an unexpected gem that I found randomly on Amazon and it was an unexpected page turner. Decrypted is the sequel that I tripped across recently and though it was entertaining, it was nowhere near as action packed and fun as it's predecessor. Instead, we find Tikaya and Rias traveling back to her home to meet a lot of people who are not at all happy to welcome the former fleet admiral from Turgonia. Turns out Rias wants to build a submarine as a research vessel and while at first it seems that everyone objects to it because they don't want him building a potential spy/warship in their waters, it turns out that they are far more worried about what he might find once he starts exploring below the waves. A lot of it (particularly the behavior of the Kyattese officials) just didn't make sense. It seemed like a reach to make the story more scintillating, and in the end, it doesn't really succeed. Though there is some nail biting suspense towards the end that provides an echo of Encrypted's glory.Even though I didn't love this book, it did make me want to go back and read Encrypted again. I started last night and it's just as much fun as I remember. And regardless of my feelings about Decrypted, I hope she writes a third book. I would love to see Tikaya and Rias featured in another story. less
