The Emperor's Edge
review 1: This is a good book, but it is a little odd. I think that it qualifies as Steampunk, but the somewhat odd steam based technology seems to have nothing to do with the plot. The plot is a little simplistic. The protagonist is awfully lucky, and in fact, it seems that her luck drives a lot of this story, though at key moments, she does provide the plans that finish things. The sidekick is also a problem, because he bails out the protagonist a bit too often. If I get the right price on the sequels I might read them, but I am not excited to find them.I got this book for free.
review 2: I really didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. I can't tell what time/era this is supposed to take place in, and it really doesn't matter. The author manag
... moreed to create a science fiction world that is believable and doesn't need a specific time. As I was reading, I kept thinking of the movie Demolition Man for some reason. Basically, the young emperor has new ideas that would shake up years of history and battle that don't sit well with some of the older people. There is a split of those who are for and against the new emperor, but that doesn't get fully exposed until later. There is a conspiracy going on that Amaranthe Lokdon, the main character and only lead female, winds up discovering. One of the guys in charge of the plot wants to get rid of Amaranthe, so she has to seek alternatives she would never have chosen before, and abandon everything she ever knew, including the old her, in order to succeed as saving the emperor. It was a great question as to what would you do or risk in order to save others. I enjoyed the vulnerability and real emotions she had even if they weren't vocalized. I really liked reading about a strong female character that didn't just hop into bed with the first guy she sees or get so wrapped up in a good-looking guy. That was refreshing in a literary world filled with ditsy love-obsessed women that it is impossible to respect or relate to. I thought this book was very well written, especially given all of the elements it took to create. The characters were well written, I even found myself having a soft-spot for Books, the settings were descriptive enough that I could easily envision them, and the story kept me anxious to read. It was just enough sci-fi to be intriguing and set itself apart from other stories, without being overdone. A lot of killing. That was hard to swallow, but I did like that at least Amaranthe struggled with that too. I enjoyed and might read the rest in the series. I also think this could do well on the big screen. less
