review 1: I generally try to read everything chronologically, but this time I'm reading a liiiiittle out of order since I read Republic before this set of novellas and I was saving these for a terrible health week. (Hello, terrible health week.) So, I'll confess I was already intrigued by Dak and his grumpy bear-ness from Republic going into the first story. Not disappointed. All three novellas were fun, clever adventures and I really like Yanko...for reasons which I don't want to spoil here. I hope he gets his promised story, since these are essentially prequels. Also, Dak. More Dak stories. >.> :D
review 2: A fantastic look at the Nurian people of Buroker's Emperor's Edge world. Yanko is a young man on the cusp of taking the test to enter a prestigious magic-militar
... morey academy. His getting in and doing well would go a long way toward restoring his family's damaged reputation. His father doesn't think he's tough enough, so sends him to the salt mines run by his uncle. There Yanko finds himself tested in more ways than one. What surprised me is that I came out of these novellas liking Yanko's uncle more than anyone else. He's set in his ways, bound by his people's customs, and he wishes he could defy them. And he respect Yanko for doing so. I also very much liked the three women who take center stage in the second novella. I would love to read quite a bit more about them. less

3.5 stars for the set. Second tale was best. Nice to see some Nurian perspective.

Love Lindsay Buroker. An intriguing addition to the Emperor's Edge canon.
