review 1: I picked up these books after finishing another of Lindsay Buroker's series' "The Emperor's Edge". I love Buroker's writing style, and found this book refreshing. 'Flash Gold' is the first book in a series of novellas. So far there are 4 and I'm waiting as patiently as possible for the 5th and final book. I'm hoping once the story is completed they'll be released all together in one book. The first book introduces you to Kali McAlister, an 18 year old "engineer" who dreams of escaping The Yukon because she's never felt she fit in. Throw in a rare alchemical compound her father created that she's trying to keep under wraps, a nefarious ex-boyfriend, sky pirates and a sexy bounty hunter named Cedar, and you've got a quick but thoroughly entertaining read. I highly recommend ... morethis book, and the entire series. The only reason I deducted a star from my 5 star rating is because I wish it was a full length novel! I can't get enough of Kali and Cedar!
review 2: Even though this story is relatively short, the author made me care about the characters very early on. The story was just the right size to give me enough information so that I felt like I got a whole story's worth, but short enough to keep it exciting until the very end. My only suggestion would be for a couple more transitions between events. I'm already reading the next story in the series. I hope this becomes an on-going series! less
