review 1: As always moments of crystal insight, Shriver looks for a slice through the dark side. The cheery fight against cancer with brave patients boosting the morale of their tearful visitors is turned upside down in the irascible Glynis. She is impossible, crabby, she gave herself the mesothelioma as a student silversmith wearing asbestos mitts. The men in white coats cynically prescribing end-of-life treatments that bankrupt the bereavedin the name of battling the disease embody the professional complicity of doctor, hospital and insurance evil-doers in a novel that strips the system of its gooey dissimulations. Alas, a utopian fantasy is tacked on at the end, which ought to have been satirical but somehow seems not to be. Don't quite get it, coming from this aut... morehor.
review 2: I would probably give this book 3.5. Not the most taxing of reads but another great Lionel Shriver moral conundrum. Do you leave work having earned lots of money and enjoy your retirement on an idyllic island in the middle of nowhere with you wife? Or do you stay at the job that you hate just to keep your medical insurance because your loved one has a serious and life threatening illness which will cost a lot of money? Lionel has a way of making you think and really puts the reader in a plausible scenario and one which I would imagine people find themselves waking up to. It's a challenging read for those who perhaps face health issues but it should be a required read for the US health industry. less

It takes you to a dark place - without much optimism.

I liked this though the ending felt a bit rushed.
