review 1: Such high quality writing for a first novel. This book deals with the social question: who is to blame when children do wrong and what can we do to prevent it? We witness two young Scottish children. One's mother is a crack addict. He is bounced around foster families until one foster mom adopts him. Much later, he is defense lawyer for a boy with a wealthy and abusive father who, at age 11, is being tried as an adult for murder.
review 2: 3/5. I'm a bit conflicted about the outcome of this book, actually. I really enjoyed it all the way through. It's well written, it's easy to follow, clearly plotted. Both the present day and the flashback sections kept me hooked and I couldn't wait to find out the outcome. It's a crime thriller so, undoubtedly, there is
... more going to be a twist. The twist arrived and nothing happened! The flashback sections began to gather pace, too, and I was eager to read on but they also ended on an anti-climax. I did really enjoy it, but I just wish the end was a bit more action-packed. less

Meh.....Predictable and too long. I did not care for one character in this book.
