review 1: I bought this book during the #SexMeUpReadathon that was run by the Gosling Girls. Lisa came to my attention after I enjoyed Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series and I was eager to try something of hers. I had a little conversation on twitter with Lisa where she told me I’d have to tell her if I was team stepbrother or team priest so I was already intrigued to find out what the storyline involved. I dived in without reading the blurb. The story focuses on main character Lexie Banks who the story follows to her summer in Rome. Lexi leaves behind her gorgeous step brother (Trent) who she may have accidentally just slept with and seeking absolution she signs up to help with a children-orientated art project run by gorgeous priest Alessandro Moretti. So, as I’ve said I didn... moret read the blurb before I read this so I was totally shocked by the whole Lexie/Trent relationship right at the start of the book. This slightly taboo and controversial relationship had me a bit shocked but after the narrative goes on to explore their relationship in more depth I could actually get on board with it a little. I really liked Trent’s character as seen by narrator Lexie. He seemed like a genuinely amazing, caring and gorgeous guy it’s no wonder that there was this undercurrent of attraction between them. At first I really liked Lexie too. She seemed to be normal, down to earth and a good character to relate to in the other aspects of her life – especially in her relationship with her step-mother which appeared very realistic with its ups and downs.Lexie, spending her summer abroad, meets our second potential suitor Alessandro Morretti while she’s coming out of confessional where she attempts to absolve some of the sin she feels after her and Trent ended up together. It was after meeting Alessandro that I started to like Lexie’s character a bit less. Alessandro was sort of like the forbidden fruit to Lexie and although there was an almost instant and palpable attraction to Alessandro I didn’t like that it felt like she had no respect for him and his position in the church whatsoever. At some points I was actually rooting for their coupling to be the one that would pull through but the further into the story I got the more I was attracted to Alessandro and the less I liked that it felt Lexie was stringing him along, culminating in him totally questioning his beliefs to be turned down.I thought that the end of the story was a little bit rushed meaning that the reactions to the outcome of the Lexie/Trent/Alessandro triangle were downplayed and completely underwhelming. I initially thought I would be reading the rest of this series but as the ending didn’t pan out the way I thought and as the second in the series doesn’t have Lexie as the main character I don’t think I will be rushing for it. Although don’t get me wrong I did enjoy parts of the relationship between Lexie and Trent/Alessandro, the overall outcome for them pulled some of that enjoyment away for me.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast, easy read. It was a lot more light and fun than I had been expecting, but I genuinely liked all the characters quite a bit. I'm looking forward to reading the rest. The only thing was that I felt the ending was rushed and just sort of happened. There were still some angles I thought could be explored, especially with Lexie's friend Sam. But I am hoping there will be more in the other books. less
