review 1: The premise of the book is fascinating. The broken characters and the impact of their early childhood draws you in. There were a few tangents that led to nowhere. And at times the repetition got tiring. I wish the author had more faith in the reader. That said, I read it quickly and found the writing style kept my attention although I did not like the section with the Hazy reunion a.k.a Peace and I expected more growth from the Martha-Henry relationship. The relationship with Mary Jane had legs. And in the end, he is a twenty-year-old who starts out too wise for his ages and stages and then never quite matures.

... morerd to read. There were times, especially toward the beginning of the book, that I didn't want to pick it up and couldn't figure out why. I think it was because it was too sad, not because I didn't like it. Anyway, it was a great read and I'm surprised it didn't make a bigger splash when it was published. Highly recommend. less
